Aug 30, 2019 (China Knowledge) - The Shanghai World Artificial Intelligence (AI) Conference held yesterday released new national champions in the AI sector named by the Chinese government, bringing the total number of such champions to 15 since the initiative was launched in 2017. Both Huawei and Hikvision enter the list.

The world’s largest telecommunications equipment supplier Huawei plays a leading role in the research on AI infrastructure and software, while Hivision, a surveillance systems giant focuses initiatives related to video perception.

The latest national champions also includes smartphone maker Xiaomi (01810), China’s second-largest e-commerce firm (JD), and internet security company Qihoo 360, and these companies will take lead roles in fields of smart homeware, smart supply chain, and online safety respectively.

In addition to that, facial recognition startups Megvii and Yitu are also selected in the national champion team that carry out research and development in image perception and image computing, respectively.

China put forward the idea of national AI champions back in 2017. Baidu (BIDU), Alibaba (BABA) and Tencent (TCEHY) and iFlyTek (002230) all entered the list and these companies have moved on to develop autonomous driving, smart city initiatives and computer vision in medical diagnosis and speech recognition, respectively.

The update of national AI champions reflects that China is encouraging more private companies and research institutions specialized in cutting-edge technologies to support the AI development in the country, aiming to narrow China’s AI tech gap with the U.S by 2030.
