Apple opens new development center in China to quell Chinese trade recession

Jul 11, 2019 (China Knowledge) - Apple has opened an app and design accelerator in Shanghai – the first of its kind in China. The development center will garner new opportunities for its Chinese market for the tech giant as their business becomes more and more service oriented.

This launch comes amidst China’s ongoing trade war with the United States, which had slowed growth in iPhone sales across the country, although some devices such as the iPad continue to show momentum.

“We believe the economic environment in China has been further impacted by rising trade tensions with the United States. As the climate of mounting uncertainty weighed on financial markets, the effects appeared to reach consumers as well, with traffic to our retail stores and our channel partners in China declining as the quarter progressed,” wrote Tim Cook to his shareholders after a lackluster first quarter this year. However, Apple is expected to rebound in Q3 after recent trade tension recessions.

The new Apple development center will help contribute to this prospective rebound. Over time, all 5 major areas of Apple development training will be offered including iOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, and iPadOS.

These lectures in the Pudong facility will also give way to networking opportunities for Chinese developers, who have generated USD 29 bln in the past 9 years, and over USD 8.7 bln in the last year, nearly 40% of all consumer spending in 2018.

Apple executives hope deploying this center in China’s largest city will help developers create more quality apps, improving user experience, and thereby incentivizing investment and spending on Apple’s network of products and services.

Xie Enwei, Apple’s head of developer relations, confirms Apple success in the Chinese market when he says, “developers here in China are leading the world with some of the most popular apps on the App Store, and we are proud to be providing this additional support for them.”

Apple can only hope to replicate the same success they experienced in India with their pioneer development center, where employees from major companies such as Flipkart or Paytm have applied their learnings from lectures and coaches in order to improve their companies applications.
