China 5G, commercial 5G license, China unicom, China telecom

Jun 06, 2019 (China Knowledge) - On June 6, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) granted three state-owned telecommunications network operators and the nation’s cable network giant. Massive investments in the world’s largest mobile market are expected after the announcement.

According to MIIT, Hong Kong-listed carriers China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom, and China Broadcasting Network, were each given commercial 5G services licenses.

China has granted the telecoms to conduct 5G trials at the end of 2018, whereas the licenses given out today was a green light for full commercial deployment.

The announcement is seen as dismissing speculation that the US government’s blacklisting Huawei Technologies will result in push back of large-scale 5G buildout in China.

The granting of commercial 5G licenses is also seen as China’s statement that 5G will not be delayed even when US export ban on Huawei. The 5G licenses give China a higher bargaining chip and create stronger internal political support.

China is trying to stay ahead in the global race to deploy 5G telecoms infrastructure. This will lay the foundation for China to boost its industrial internet, autonomous driving and smart cities, among a range of advanced mobile applications.

Although countries like South Korea, the United States, Australia, and the UK have long granted commercial 5G services in Q2, the huge scale of China’s market outweighs the first-mover advantages of these countries.
