Jan 16, 2019 (China Knowledge) - World’s most valuable startup Bytedance which operates short-video sharing app Tik Tok (Douyin in China) and and news aggregator Jinri Toutiao has now launched a new video-based messaging service to challenge Tencent Holding’s WeChat.

The new mobile app called “Duoshan” operates in a similar fashion to Snapchat and allows users to send text messages as well as images and videos that are accessible for up to 72 hours to each other.

Doushan is currently in its beta testing phase and is currently available for download for all Android users and users can login to the service with their Douyin account.

While Bytedance has not specifically positioned its new service as a rival to WeChat, Tencent has since blocked the download link for Duoshan on WeChat.

The move by Bytedance is part of a wider move by Chinese internet giants to build an ecosystem of apps and services to cater to the various aspects of their user’s lives to deliver greater convenience to them and increase usage time on their platforms.

Bytedance’s Douyin has now integrated external online shopping links from Alibaba’s Taobao and Tmall marketplaces, a feature that is still unavailable on WeChat.
