Dec 28, 2018 (China Knowledge) - Chinese ride-hailing giant Didi Chuxing has partnered with Shandong University and the Jinan city traffic police to manage traffic through the use of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Under the partnership Didi has launched the smart traffic management system named JTBrain, on Wednesday. This system is installed in the capital of Shandong province, alongside with a self-adaptive traffic-light control system.

According to the chief scientist at Didi’s intelligence transport department, Liu Xianghong, the system which serves as a decision-making platform can help increase traffic flow efficiency.

JTBrain was modeled using core algorithms and data collected under different traffic conditions. Hence, the system will be able to realize different time control mechanisms required under different situation.

Zou Nan, the director of Transportation Study Center of Shandong University has added that, the system has evolved over time, providing users with more optimal and accurate traffic solutions as data points now covers 36 streets and 450 crossroads in the city. These data are gathered through video footages on streets, and the live recommendations through mobile applications and outdoor LED screens.

According to the local traffic police, JTBrain has since helped cut the average morning and evening commute time by 10.7% and 10.9% respectively in the tests carried out over the past 6 months.
