Dec 20, 2018 (China Knowledge) - The number of Chinese visitors to Thailand in a year has reached 10 million for the first time. Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, yesterday, announced the arrival of its 10 millionth Chinese visitor of the 2018.
He Weixin, from China’s Yunan province was the 10 millionth Chinese visitor to Thailand in the year 2018. She was welcomed by the Tourism Authority of country along with representatives from the tourism-related public and private companies at the airport. The Minister of Tourism, Weerasak Kowsurat also graced the welcome ceremony. This was He Weixin’s second visit to Thailand with her family.
This is the first time for Thailand to receive 10 million visitors from China in a year. The increase in the number of Chinese visitors has signified the success of the Thai tourism industry’s ongoing effort to attract tourists to the country.
The tourism minister, during the ceremony, mentioned about the ongoing efforts by the government to market Thailand as a preferred destination for travel, through enhancing the country’s safety and security standards. The government also plans to improvement facilities and access to the emerging provinces at the same time, to make them more attractive to tourists.
According to a report by World Travel & Tourism Council, the total contribution of travel and tourism to the Thailand’s GDP was USD 95 bln in 2017, at 21.2% of GDP. It is forecasted to rise by 7.4% in 2018 and is expected to continue rising by 5.6% per annum to USD 175.2 billion in 2028, at 28.8% of the country’s GDP.
Chinese visitors are the biggest contributor to the country’s tourism sector. The number of Chinese travelers to Thailand hit 9 million between January to October this year, which generated a revenue of USD 103 billion for Thailand.
