May 04, 2021 (China Knowledge) - German air taxi firm Volocopter has agreed to form a venture with Zhejiang Geely Holding Group (0175) to launch air taxis in China. Geely had previously invested USD 94 mln in Volocopter in 2019 and will now look to help the German company launch it in China.
The venture has applied for an operating licence and vehicle certification from China’s Civil Aviation Administration Commission (CAAC), and the licence must be permitted before they can start their operations around China. However, this process might be expedited because of a standing agreement between the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and CAAC, which means that after Volocopter becomes certified in Europe, it be easier to get an approval from CAAC.
The Volocopter 2X is a two-seater electric air taxi with nine exchangeable batteries powering 18 rotors. If one of the rotors stopped working, the remaining rotors will still guarantee safety to the riders. Urban air mobility will reduce traffic congestion, adding a new public transport option around cities.
