Feb 22, 2021 (China Knowledge) - CGTN, formerly known as CCTV-9 and CCTV News is a Beijing-based English-language cable TV news service which recently has turned to French authorities in an attempt to regain its rights to broadcast in Europe, after the UK regulator, Ofcom revoke its license to air earlier this month. Ofcom’s move has heightened the existing tensions between UK and China, with Beijing officially halting BBC’s World News for fabricating inaccurate and misleading news stories by its reporters.
The loss of its UK license was huge for CGTN, which has made a big investment on London with large staffing and physical presence. Unlike UK, France do not have regulations pertaining to prohibit state-controlled broadcasters from airing.
