Nov 06, 2019 (China Knowledge) - Ant Financial, the financial arm of Alibaba, has introduced an international version of its mobile payment app Alipay. The international version of Alipay has been specially designed and will enable international visitors to experience the convenience and ease of mobile payments for a wide variety of mobile transaction on shopping, dining and entertainment, in mainland China.
Short-stay foreign visitors can download the Alipay mobile app on their Android or iOS devices, and use their overseas mobile number for registration to access a mini program called “Tour Pass”. With the mini program, visitors will then be able to use a prepaid service offered by the Bank of Shanghai to load Chinese currency into their mobile wallets.
Visitors can also use their overseas debit or credit cards to load money into the prepaid cards. Each prepaid card is valid for 90 days, and any remaining amount will be fully refunded. The top-up amount for the prepaid cards can be of any amount between RMB 100 (USD 14.25) to RMB 2,000 (USD 286).
This new service is expected to bring much benefit to foreign visitors to China, as they can use mobile payments without the need to register for a local mobile number and a Chinese bank account. With an estimated 30.5 mln visitors to China in 2018, Alipay will likely be able to expand its international user base as well.
According to Ant Financial chairman and CEO Eric Jing, Alipay currently serves more than 1.2 bln users worldwide.
