Huawei Technologies; Futurewei Technologies; layoffs

Jul 15, 2019 (China Knowledge) - Chinese telecoms equipment company Huawei Technologies is planning extensive layoffs in the United States after being listed on the U.S.’s "Entity List" and experiencing a series of repressive measures. The layoffs will affect about 850 employees at Huawei's U.S.-based research and development subsidiary, Futurewei Technologies.

Though hundreds of people will be laid off, Huawei's Chinese employees in the United States subsidiary will be offered an option to return home and stay with the company. Some employees have already been notified of their dismissal, and more planned job cuts will be announced later.

After the Bureau of Industry and Security decided to put Huawei on its so-called “Entity List”, the employees of Futurewei have faced communication restrictions with their colleagues in Huawei's home offices, located in China.

The U.S recently indicated that it would ease up on the restrictions, and the U.S. government would issue licenses to companies seeking to sell goods to Huawei, after verifying that there was no threat to national security. But Huawei's future access to American supplies remains uncertain.
