Nov 27, 2018 (China Knowledge) - The Beijing Medical Health Collaborative Innovation Action Plan jointly held by Beijing Municipal Government News Office and Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission has announced its 2018-2020 plan to accelerate its pharmaceutical industry development plan. The new area to be located in Beijing E-Town has been zoned for pharmaceutical and healthcare industry development.
In recent years biomedicine and healthcare industry have been the leading industrial innovation clusters in Beijing E-Town with an output value exceeding 50% growth for consecutive 5 years in the capital. More than 700 such enterprises including Bayer, Beijing Tide Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd, and Tongrentang Chinese Medicine, has formed a supply chain which covers biomedicine, medical equipment and many other healthcare providers.
The annual output value last year reached RMB 35.4 billion, while the first 8 months alone this year gained RMB 29.12 billion, a year-on-year increase of 10%. With biomedical industry as one of its key industries, Beijing E-Town is bringing another “RMB 100 billion” industrial cluster to its basket of other RMB 100-billion hi-tech industries.
In order to promote cluster development, Beijing E-Town has offered the biomedical industry adequate development space and many supporting schemes to nurture or help build RMB 100 billion-level industries by establishing platforms for early-stage R&D, pilot production programs, research-to-market services. This also speeds up the rapid transition for some enterprises from “quantity” to “quality”.
According to Sang Guowei, chairman of the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association, the growth rate of Beijing's pharmaceutical industry has gradually picked up since 13th Five-Year Plan (2016 – 2020). In 2017, the scale of the industry reached RMB 163.08 billion, a year-on-year increase of 13%.
It has become a strategic emerging industry that meets the goal of National Science and Technology Innovation Center and has the characteristics of high-precision and high quality manufacturing in line with national industrial reforms.
Last year the Beijing Municipal Party Committee and the Municipal Government issued the “Guiding Opinions on Accelerating the Development of High-tech Industry in Science and Technology Innovation in Beijing”, and proposed 10 high-tech industries such as pharmaceutical. Sang Guowei believes that China's pharmaceutical R&D will flourish with talents who have studied abroad or received local training arrived in Beijing by drones. Local renowned universities and research institutes have also developed numerous promising new drugs to tap on Beijing E-Town’s platforms for rapid research-to-marketplace services and support schemes.
The acceleration in biomedicine related fields’ innovations and patents will potentially surpass any country for the industry in coming decade according to many experts.
