TEDA crowns as National Eco-industrial Area

Nov. 5, 2012 (China Knowledge) - Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area or TEDA, a triple-A rated industrial park, has received the National Ecosystem Industrial Demonstration Area assessed by the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Science and Technology.

In 2008, TEDA was awarded as one of the first national ecosystem industrial demonstration areas in China, and according to relevant requirements, the park receives performance evaluation every three years.

In recent years, TEDA has committed in the development of low-carbon economy. In 2009, TEDA’s administration set up an EcoCenter to support the area's low-carbon development strategy during 12th five-year plan period as well as helping companies to be more efficient and reduce emissions.

On March 23, 2010, TEDA launched Asia's first Industrial Symbiosis (IS) project, which was founded by the EU's Switch Asia project and the administrative committee of TEDA. The four-year project aims to build an industrial symbiosis network in Tianjin Binhai New Area.

At present, 650 companies have joined the project and 40 synergies have been achieved, which saved RMB 12 million for enterprises. Meanwhile the project helped TEDA reduce 157,000 metric tons of landfill waste, 32,000 metric tons of carbon emission, 772,000 metric tons of new raw materials consumption and saved 300,000 metric tons of water.

Within TEDA vicinity, there will be construction of new energy projects, promoting the usage of advanced energy technologies and reduce the usage of conventional energy. It is expected that the carbon dioxide emission measure by GDP per capita will decline significantly making TEDA an eco-friendly and green industrial park.
