China's railway passenger volume up 2.5% in Jan-May

Jun. 19, 2012 (China Knowledge) - China saw its railway passenger volume increase by 18.36 million or 2.5% YoY to 756.10 million in the first five months of this year, according to the latest figures released by the Ministry of Railways.
The railway system's cargo and package volume grew 3.8% YoY to 1.68 billion metric tons during the period. The figure included about 1.68 billion metric tons of cargo throughput, 3.8% more than in the same period of last year.
The railway system transported 986.09 million metric tons of coal in the first five months, 44.33 million metric tons of grains and 42.44 million metric tons of fertilizer and farming pesticide during the period, reflecting growth of 6.2%, 14.3% and 11.3% YoY, respectively.

From January to May, the country's fixed-asset investment in the railway sector fell 41.1% YoY to RMB 129.65 billion, including RMB 105.48 billion in infrastructure construction, down 46.9% YoY.
