Chongqing's exports surges 150% in Q1

Apr. 17, 2012 (China Knowledge) - Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality saw the highest export growth of 150% year on year across the country in the first quarter of this year, with export value hitting US$5.84 billion, according to the latest statistics released by the Chongqing customs.

In the first three months, the city's imports surged 79.2% year on year to US$3.15 billion, taking its foreign trade to a total of US$8.99 billion during the period, reflecting a growth of 120% year on year.

The local customs said that the sharp increases in the city's exports and imports were a result of booming processing trade, which soared 4.4 times to US$3.84 billion in the period, comprising US$3.54 billion in export value and US$300 million in import value, up 4.8 times and 2.1 times, respectively.

Laptops were the top exported products. The city exported 9.21 million laptops in the first quarter, 5.9 times more than in the same period of last year, and the export value increased by 5.5 times to US$3.14 billion.

Chongqing's trade with its top three partners, the E.U., the ASEAN member countries and the U.S., were US$2.07 billion, US$1.82 billion and US$1.5 billion, up 120%, 190% and 170% year on year, respectively.
