China's railway passenger volume up 0.7% in Q1

Apr. 9, 2012 (China Knowledge) - China saw its railway passenger volume increase by 3.12 million or 0.7% year on year to 453.25 million in the first three months of this year, said the Ministry of Railways.
 
The railway system's cargo and package volume grew 3.2% year on year to 998.61 million metric tons during the period. The figure included about 995.71 million metric tons of cargo throughput, 3.2% more than in the same period of last year.
 
The railway system transported 594.07 million metric tons of coal in the first quarter, 112.06 million metric tons of crude oil, 34.62 million metric tons of grains and 27.58 million metric tons of fertilizer and farming pesticide during the period.

In 2011, China's railway passenger throughput rose 11.1% year on year to 1.86 billion, and the growth rate was the highest since 2004. Cargo and package throughput increased 8% year on year to 3.93 billion metric tons last year.
