is expected to overtake the U.S. as the largest smartphone market in the world this year, according to the latest report by U.S.-based research firm International Data Corp (IDC), sources reported.China
's smartphone shipments surpassed those of the U.S. for two consecutive quarters in the second half of last year, and this momentum will continue this year, according to the report.
Boosted by sales of models priced below US$200, China
is estimated to have a 20.7% share in the global smartphone shipments in 2012, slightly higher than the 20.6% for the U.S., said IDC.
India will become the world's seventh-largest smartphone market this year with a 2.9% share and Brazil is forecast to be in the tenth place with a 2.3% share.
By the end of 2016, China
and the U.S. will maintain as the world's top two smartphone markets with 20.2% and 15.3% shares, respectively, followed by 9.3% for India, 4.7% for Brazil and 3.7% for the U.K.
