Feb. 3, 2012 (China Knowledge) - Taiwan-based
AU Optronics Corp, the world's third-largest maker of liquid crystal displays by revenue, yesterday signed an agreement with Japanese display material supplier Idemitsu Kosan Co Ltd to jointly develop next-generation OLED displays.
Pursuant to the agreement, Idemitsu Kosan will supply the materials of OLEDs, or organic light-emitting diodes, while AU Optronics will reinforce the development of OLED products at the Japanese firm.
The small-sized OLED panels will be installed in smartphones and tablet PCs, while the large-sized OLED displays for TVs, said AU Optronics.
The company expects to start production of the first batch of OLED products for handsets next quarter, said AU Optronics Spokesperson Hsiao Ya-wen.
Shipments of OLED TVs are expected to increase from estimated 113,000 units in 2012 to over 11 million units in 2017, said analysts, adding that revenue from OLED displays is estimated to reach US$20 billion by 2018.
Headquartered in Hsinchu, Taiwan, the company has its China’s manufacturing facilities in Suzhou
and in Shanghai
. Its other facilities are located in Singapore, Czech Republic and Slovenia.
