Baidu remains dominant in China's search engine market

Jan. 30, 2012 (China Knowledge) - Baidu Inc<BIDU>, China's No.1 Internet search provider, topped the country's search engine market with a 78.3% share in the fourth quarter of 2011, according to statistics released by Analysys International, a market research company.

Google China ranked second with a 16.7% market share, followed by Sogou Inc, an online search engine of Inc<SOHU> that is one of China's largest web portals, with 2.7%, Sousou, the search engine unit of Tencent Holdings Ltd<0700>, with 1.5% and Nasdaq-listed Inc's<NTES> with 0.4%.

In the first quarter of 2011, China's search engine market size reached RMB 3.25 billion, reflecting a sequential decline of 15.6%. But the market size surged 33.2% to RMB 4.32 billion in the second quarter and increased 24.5% to RMB 5.38 billion in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter of last year, the country's market size in search engine field reached RMB 5.8 billion, up 7.8% quarter on quarter.

For the whole year of 2011, China's market size in search engine industry totaled RMB 18.75 billion, which is also expected to rise this year, said analysts.
