Jan. 25, 2012 (China Knowledge) - China, the world's largest cotton consumer, imported 790,000 metric tons of cotton in December, reflecting an increase of 329,000 metric tons or 71.2% year on year, according to figures released by the General Administration of Customs
In 2011, the country's cotton imports totaled 3.36 million metric tons, up 18.6% year on year.
The National Bureau of Statistics
said earlier that China's cotton output fell 10.7% year on year to 6.6 million metric tons in 2011 as the plantation area for the crop fell 10.5%.
The output of yarn rose 12.4% year on year to 28.95 million metric tons last year, including 2.73 million metric tons in December alone.
