>, the nation's largest fixed-line operator, has inked an agreement with British mobile operator Everything Everywhere Ltd to start mobile business in the U.K. in the first quarter of 2012.
Pursuant to the agreement, China Telecom will provide mobile services on the basis of the British partner's existing network in Chinese language via a unit China Telecom (Europe) mainly to Chinese residents and visitors to the U.K. Financial details have yet been disclosed.
Yan Ou, Managing Director of China Telecom (Europe), said the company will start business in the U.K soon with tailored mobile services and competitive tariffs.
This is the first time a Chinese carrier launches mobile-virtual-network-operator services outside China, said a person familiar with the matter.
Established in 2006, China Telecom (Europe), which has headquarters in London, owns a wholly-owned subsidiary in Frankfurt, as well as branches in Moscow and Dubai.
Everything Everywhere, the biggest mobile operator in the U.K. by revenue, was founded in July 2010 via the merger of the U.K. business of Deutsche Telekom AG and France Telecom SA, sources reported.
