Samsung approved to build flash memory plant in China

Jan. 4, 2012 (China Knowledge) - Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, the world's leading LCD panel manufacturer, has received approval from the South Korean government to build a flash memory manufacturing plant in China.

The plant, which is designed to produce NAND flash memory chips principally for music players and mobile handsets, will have an output capacity of 100,000 wafers per month, said the Ministry of Knowledge Economy.

Construction of the plant, which is subject to approval by the Chinese government, is due to start in the first half of 2012 with proposed production in the second half of the year.

The Ministry, however, did not disclose the location and investment of the new plant. A person familiar with the matter said the plant would cost around US$4 billion.

Samsung Electronics is the global largest NAND flash memory chip maker with a market share of 40%. The world's NAND market is estimated to increase to US$29 billion in 2012, about 50% of which would be contributed by China, sources reported.
