Introduction
Wujiang Export Processing Zone (Wujiang EPZ) was approved by the State Council in 2005, and is located in Wujiang Economic and Technological Development Zone. Wujiang EPZ lies in the southern part of Wujiang, with Taihu Lake on the west and the Grand Canal traversing it. The zone is merely one hour from Hangzhou, 15 minutes from downtown Suzhou, and 45 minutes from Shanghai.

Wujiang enjoys convenient transportation and logistics facilities in its home city. The Shanghai-Jiangsu-Zhejiang Expressway, State Highway 318 and the Suzhou-Jiading-Hangzhou Highway all run through Wujiang. Shanghai Hongqiao Airport and Shanghai Pudong International Airport are merely 54 km and 86 km from the city, respectively. Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport is 150 km to the south. The Suzhou Station on the Beijing-Shanghai Railway lies just 22 km to the north. Wujiang is only 60 km from Shanghai Port.

Investment Climate
Wujiang EPZ started operation on Dec. 12, 2006. The zone encourages export-oriented manufacturing and processing enterprises as well as logistics and warehousing firms in the information technology, precision machinery and new materials industries.

In 2012, Wujiang EPZ’s gross output value rose 12% year on year to RMB 10.5 billion and its foreign trade amounted to US$3.33 billion, higher than the US$2 billion it realized in a year earlier.

Wujiang EPZ booked US$110.27 million in registered foreign investment in 2011, which consists of 7 new approved projects and 3 capital-raising projects. While, the utilized FDI for 2011 reahced US$50 million, which nearly half of the total amount from the previous year.

  • Wujiang has an advantageous geographic location, being close to Suzhou and Shanghai, which are major economic centers in China.
  • A traditional hub for the silk and textile industries, Wujiang has strong potential for further development in these areas.


Limitations
  • Wujiang's economy is weaker than that of Kunshan, another county-level city in Jiangsu.
  • High-tech industries are still under development.
